Hanni Fakhoury is a trial lawyer, strategic counselor and accomplished litigator. His attention to detail, preparation and pragmatism makes him effective at crafting creative solutions to vexing legal problems, a skill set he takes to every case he litigates, and every dispute he mediates.
Hanni is an elected fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers and a Northern California “Super Lawyer.” He has tried eighteen federal criminal cases to verdict in courthouses throughout California, and handled every other facet of criminal investigation and litigation, including representing witnesses and potential targets before charges are filed, plea negotiation and motion practice. Hanni has worked on the full spectrum of federal criminal matters, including tax, wire, bank, honest services, health care and securities fraud, as well as money laundering, export control violations and computer crimes. His clients have included a former California state Assemblymember and attorney, physicians, corporate executives, small business owners, and a NASA contractor.
The rare trial attorney who enjoys practicing—and excels—in the appellate courts, Hanni has also been lead counsel on twenty-two direct appeals in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, presenting eleven oral arguments. He currently serves as the Vice-Chair of the Alameda County Bar Association’s Appellate Section Executive Committee.
Hanni is also a mediator. Having negotiated settlements in hundreds of criminal cases, Hanni knows that resolving tough disputes requires not just knowledge and preparation, but also civility, effective communication and empathy. Hanni takes those skills with him into every mediation. He serves the Northern District of California as a mediator in its ADR program.
A Bay Area native, Hanni proudly serves the Northern District of California as a member of its Criminal Justice Act (“CJA”) trial panel, representing indigent criminal defendants. He was also selected by the Northern District bench to serve on the court’s Standing Committee on Professional Responsibility, Criminal Rules and Practice Committee, and CJA Administration Committee.
A sought after teacher, Hanni is a lecturer at the University of California, Berkeley School of Law, where he co-teaches a seminar on white collar crime. He has presented and lectured at over 100 legal conferences to wide audiences, including judges, attorneys and the public at large.
